On myspace soon
November 1, 2007
I have sined up with myspace and it has some useful features I could use to promote my music. I am not sure how I can integrate all my stuff on so many sites! website, wordpress, flickr, myspace and more. Anyway I uploaded one of my favourite tracks “pills for breakfast” just to test and will upload my latest work soon. I am not sure where to blog, here or on my own website, or on myspace, or whether I like blogging at all. But be patient for now. Find me on myspace here.
Computer Music Project
September 17, 2007
During a recent overseas trip to Macedonia I collected traditional folk music with the idea that I might use it in some compositions. After listening to a range of recordings I found that it would be difficult to synchronise the timing signatures of much of the folk music with my material. It is not unusual for Macedonian traditional folk music to have a time signature of 7/8 or 11/8.
This started me thinking about the limitations of how commercial hardware and software sequencers deal with time and timing structures. So my idea for a project is to consider and explore unusual timing structures. To take the idea of manipulating time further I considered that time does not have to be linear. That it can flow and change on different levels in a composition. So I ask the question on what level can you extend timing and timing structures in a composition.
One example would be for each part in a composition to follow its own tempo path, to have a curve that works in relation to other parts, for the overall composition to cascade rather than follow a strict tempo.
This project will use supercollider to extend the functionality of sequencing in the time domain. To change from grid based sequencing and to explore timing structures in a free and organic way.
